    • Married by licence at Lichfield Cathedral. The licence is held at Lichfield Records Office. Licence granted on 20 October 1753 before Revered Thos. White "which day appeared personally Humphry Higgitt of Rugely Batchelor aged 21 years (prayed?) a Liconse to be Granted to him in the Solomnization of a Marriage with Mary Trigg of the same place Spinster aged 24 years in the parish Church of Rugely the said Humphry Higgitt being Sworn the Liconse was Decreed" The attached certificate reads: "Know all men by these present that (one?) Humphry Higgitt of Rugely in the County of Stafford (Hatmaker?) and John Doo. of the same are held and firmly bound to John Addenbrooke Doctor of Divinity Dean of the Cathedral Church of Lichfield and Chapter of the same in the pain of one hundred pounds of lawfull money of Great Britain to be paid to the said Dean and Chapter....... ...... twentieth day of October in the twenty seventh year of the Reign of our Sovereign Lord George the Second by the grace of God of Great Britain France and Ireland King defender of the Faith and in the Year of our Lord one Thousand Seven Hundred and fifty three. Lower part of the certificate is signed by Humphry Higgitt, sealed in the presence of Jno Hutchinson. Note: the licence application is witnessed by John Doo (ie a fictional witness). The marraige is witnessed by John Hutchinson. It may be a coincidence, but the baptism of a John Hutchinson is recorded in the Rugely Parish Register, on 24 October 1733, a few weeks before that of Humphry Higgitt.
